The School Milk Knowledge Hub showcases global school milk programmes and their impact.

School milk programmes have a long and impactful history across the globe, implemented either as part of broader school feeding initiatives or as stand-alone schemes. Recognised as a vital social protection mechanism, these programmes not only deliver essential nutrition and educational support to children but also stimulate local economies and agricultural development.

According to the most recent data published in Bulletin of the IDF No. 531/2024, over 210 million children in 104 countries benefit from the inclusion of milk and dairy products in school feeding initiatives. These programmes are highly adaptable, with the most commonly provided dairy products being liquid milk (98%)yoghurt (48%), and cheese (32%). Unflavoured and low-fat options are predominant, reflecting a focus on health and accessibility.

Since 1993, the International Dairy Federation (IDF) has prioritised support for school milk programmes. In 2024, IDF launched the School Milk Knowledge Hub, a digital and interactive platform led by global experts. The Hub consolidates knowledge and best practices, offering a comprehensive overview of the history and evolution of school milk programmes, along with a growing collection of case studies and data.

These case studies, compiled by IDF experts and national committees, highlight practical approaches to programme design and implementation, and include downloadable resources for adaptation and use. A dedicated resources section provides access to reports, templates, and design materials to inspire and guide stakeholders in developing or enhancing their own initiatives.

If you are interested in launching a school milk programme in your country or have insights, materials, or case studies to share, IDF welcomes your contributions to the Knowledge Hub.

In addition to the Hub, Bulletin of the IDF No. 505/2020, titled “The contribution of school milk programmes to the nutrition of children worldwide,” remains a key reference. It compiles research and data from international experts, offering insights into the nutritional benefits of school milk, the diversity of dairy products used, and the broader impact on child health and development.
