The 6th IDF Nutrition & Health Symposium, held online on 21 May 2026, brought together experts from around the world to explore the role of lactose in human nutrition under the theme “Lactose 360° – From biology to emerging benefits.”
Across two sessions, the symposium provided a comprehensive overview of lactose, examining its physiological functions, health impacts and dietary relevance throughout the lifespan.
From science to practical understanding
Through scientific presentations and panel discussions, speakers highlighted the diverse roles of lactose beyond its function as a source of energy. Evidence presented during the symposium emphasised its contribution to:- Mineral absorption, particularly calcium and magnesium
- Gut health, including prebiotic‑like effects
- Metabolic and physiological functions across the lifespan
Addressing misconceptions on lactose intolerance
A key theme of the symposium was the need to clarify widespread misconceptions around lactose intolerance. Discussions highlighted that:- Lactose maldigestion and intolerance are distinct conditions
- Tolerance varies between individuals
- Most people with lactose intolerance can still consume dairy products with appropriate dietary management
