6th IDF Nutrition & Health Symposium explored the role of lactose in human health

The 6th IDF Nutrition & Health Symposium, held online on 21 May 2026, brought together experts from around the world to explore the role of lactose in human nutrition under the theme “Lactose 360° – From biology to emerging benefits.”
Across two sessions, the symposium provided a comprehensive overview of lactose, examining its physiological functions, health impacts and dietary relevance throughout the lifespan.

From science to practical understanding

Through scientific presentations and panel discussions, speakers highlighted the diverse roles of lactose beyond its function as a source of energy. Evidence presented during the symposium emphasised its contribution to:
  • Mineral absorption, particularly calcium and magnesium
  • Gut health, including prebiotic‑like effects
  • Metabolic and physiological functions across the lifespan
The sessions also reinforced the importance of considering lactose within the dairy food matrix, where interactions between nutrients and bioactive compounds influence overall health outcomes.

Addressing misconceptions on lactose intolerance

A key theme of the symposium was the need to clarify widespread misconceptions around lactose intolerance. Discussions highlighted that:
  • Lactose maldigestion and intolerance are distinct conditions
  • Tolerance varies between individuals
  • Most people with lactose intolerance can still consume dairy products with appropriate dietary management
Speakers also presented practical strategies for managing lactose intake, including gradual adaptation, consumption with mixed meals and the use of fermented or lactose‑reduced dairy products.

Health effects and personalised approaches

Scientific insights explored both the beneficial and potential adverse effects of lactose, depending on individual physiology and consumption levels. Presentations highlighted the importance of personalised nutrition approaches, allowing individuals to benefit from dairy consumption while minimising discomfort. The symposium also reviewed links between lactose‑containing foods and broader health outcomes, including bone health, weight management and gut microbiota composition.

A global platform for exchange

The event featured contributions from international experts in nutrition, gastroenterology and food science, supported by live panel discussions that enabled direct exchange with participants. IDF extends its sincere thanks to all speakers, moderators and contributors for their valuable insights and engagement throughout the symposium. The 6th IDF Nutrition & Health Symposium highlighted the importance of science‑based dialogue in advancing understanding of dairy nutrition and supporting informed dietary guidance. IDF looks forward to continuing these discussions and contributing to global nutrition knowledge.
