The International Dairy Federation (FIL-IDF) participated in the 49th session of the Codex Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL49), taking place from 11-15 May 2026 in Ottawa, Canada.
Contributing to key global discussions
At CCFL49, we continued our active involvement in Codex work through our participation in remote and physical working groups, which supports the development of international food labelling guidance.
Key topics under discussion included:
- Development of guidelines on the use of precautionary allergen labelling, as an annex to the General Standard for the Labelling of Pre-packaged Foods (CXS 1‑1985)
- Guidelines on the application of food labelling provisions in emergency situations
Additional discussions explored updates to labelling provisions, including aspects such as multipack presentation, small packaging formats and evolving labelling practices in response to innovation and market developments.
Supporting science‑based, globally relevant standards
The Codex Committee on Food Labelling plays a central role in shaping international labelling frameworks, which sit at the intersection of science, policy, trade and consumer expectations.
Through our participation, IDF contributes to ensuring that dairy perspectives are reflected in:
- Science‑based approaches to labelling
- Practical implementation across diverse markets
- Consumer understanding and trust
The session also included working group meetings and a hybrid plenary format, enabling broad participation and global exchange in English, French and Spanish languages.
Strengthening collaboration across the Codex community
Meetings such as CCFL49 highlight the importance of international collaboration in maintaining relevant, transparent and effective food labelling systems.
Our continued engagement reinforces our role as a trusted technical partner to Codex, supporting the development of harmonised standards that benefit the global dairy sector.
