The dairy community celebrated World Food Day on 16 October 2018 at the World Dairy Summit in Daejeon, Korea, through for a focused on ways to feed the world while supporting sustainability.
“The dairy sector offers nourishment to people of all age groups with nutrient-rich milk and dairy products. They are a source of high-quality proteins, vitamins and minerals which foster health,” said Ms Emond. “The School Milk Programme across the globe is one avenue of helping to address Sustainable Development Goal 2 of Zero Hunger and Goal 3 of Good Health and Well-Being.”
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, who opened the World Dairy Summit 2018 yesterday, said the dairy sector plays a vital role in attaining many of the SDGs which include poverty eradication, banishment of hunger, good health and wellbeing, and gender equality. Mr Ban also pointed out that the dairy sector creates employment through its value chain, generating the third-largest output and the largest trade volume among all agricultural industries.
He called on the dairy community to work together to advance sustainability for the future.
“I hope the accomplishment of these goals can help construct a better environment for your industry to further prosper. I look forward to your industry being duly recognized not only for the nutritional values of its products, but also for its industrial values rooted in sustainability and responsibility,” said Mr Ban.
A special session on School Milk Programme will be convened at the IDF World Dairy Summit 2018 in Daejeon, Korea on 16 October to share experiences among various countries.
The World Dairy Summit is on until 19 October, bringing together international experts, academics and policy makers in the sharing of scientific knowledge and expertise on the dairy sector and its contribution to global nutrition and sustenance.
