IDF contributed to ICAR workshop on sensor data for dairy animal health and welfare

FIL-IDF contributed to the ICAR 2026 conference in Verona, Italy, through a joint ICAR–IDF workshop focused on the use of sensor data in dairy systems.

The pre‑conference workshop brought together stakeholders from across the dairy value chain, including farmers, veterinarians, scientists, industry representatives and technology providers, to explore how data can better support animal health and welfare in practice.

Co‑moderated by Piercristiano Brazzale and Ana Granados Chapatte, the roundtable discussion highlighted both opportunities and challenges in translating digital tools into meaningful outcomes.

Key messages

Three key priorities emerged from the discussions:

  • Validation: ensuring sensor data is robust, reliable and relevant to real‑world conditions
  • Harmonisation: aligning standards and systems to support wider adoption
  • Transparency: building trust across the value chain

Participants emphasised that continued collaboration is essential to transform data into actionable insights that deliver tangible benefits for animals, farmers and the dairy sector.

The workshop highlighted the role of joint initiatives between IDF and ICAR in advancing data‑driven approaches to improve dairy cattle health and welfare.
