The IDF/ISO Analytical Week 2026, held from 5-7 May in Bern, Switzerland, brought together experts from across the global dairy community to advance analytical methods, strengthen collaboration and support the development of science‑based international standards.
Organised with the support of the Swiss National Committee (Agroscope), the event once again provided a key forum for technical exchange across disciplines including composition, microbiology, contaminants, additives, laboratory statistics and quality assurance.
Connecting science with practice
Throughout the week, discussions highlighted the importance of anchoring scientific and technical work in real‑world conditions. Engagements with farmers and dairy processors reinforced the need to ensure that analytical methods and standards reflect the diversity of production and processing systems worldwide. These practical perspectives are essential to maintaining relevance and applicability across the global dairy sector. From knowledge to implementation
Exchanges with industry partners, including Nestlé Research & Development, provided insight into how analytical methods and processing guidance are applied in complex, international operations. Discussions emphasised that successful implementation requires adaptable, science‑based approaches that account for regional variability.Informing international standards
Building on these insights, collaboration with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) explored how practical experience and processing science continue to inform the development of robust and globally relevant standards. The alignment between IDF and ISO remains critical to ensuring consistency, reliability and efficiency in analytical methods used worldwide.Advancing harmonisation and technical progress
The week also delivered important progress in the development and revision of analytical methods across key areas, including composition, microbiology, contaminants, additives, and laboratory statistics. These efforts support:- Reliable and comparable laboratory results
- Food safety and quality assurance
- Fair international trade
- Consumer confidence in dairy products
