Spotlight on Dairy in Sustainable Development: IDF World Dairy Summit 2018

A premier event in the dairy sector, the forthcoming IDF World Dairy Summit taking place in Daejeon, South Korea, from 15-19 October, is expected to draw more than a thousand international delegates. It bears the theme, Dairy for the Next Generation.
Opening the event is keynote speaker, former UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, will who address the topic, ‘SDGs and the Desirable Role of Dairy’. Codex Alimentarius Commission Secretary Tom Heilandt will also deliver a talk on global collaboration to develop standards. Ms Elisabeth Erlacher-Vindel, Head of Science and New Technologies at the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) will speak on the prudent use of antimicrobials. Mr Berhe G Tekola, Director of Animal Production and Health at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will focus on the global food market and the role of dairy products.
The World Dairy Leaders’ Forum, which will take place after the opening speech, will examine the Insight and Vision of the Future Dairy Industry: Taking into account technologies, the emerging markets and Asian realities. Chaired by the President of the International Dairy Federation (IDF) Dr Judith Bryans, the Forum will feature the CEO of Maeil Dairy, Ms Seon Hee Kim, and the CEO of Mengniu Dairy, Mr Minfang Lu.
“The IDF World Dairy Summit is a crucial part of broadening the scientific knowledge within the dairy community and presents those attending the unique opportunity to share ideas, learnings and best practice with their global counterparts and world-leading experts. In doing so IDF helps shape views on competitiveness, standards and key factors which allow the dairy sector to continually produce safe, nutritious and sustainable dairy products” said Dr Judith Bryans.
“In light of the multitude of changes we face to the political, social, technological and regulatory environments we operate in, The World Dairy Leaders Forum provides a rare opportunity to bring together dairy CEOs to learn from their insight into the future of the industry and the challenges and opportunities it holds as seen through their business expériences,” she added.
The annual Summit will also see the Chair of the IDF Science Programme Coordination Committee, Jean-Marc Delort, presiding over the plenary session on The Next Decade. The Emeritus Professor of Seoul University, Kyung-soo Chun, will deliver the plenary speech on ‘Socio-Humanistic Contemplation on the Dairy Industry’.
Day Two of the Summit will kick off with an overview of the IDF World Dairy Situation 2018 report by Jurgen Jansen of Zuivel NL. Ms Mingyu Yang of Yili Dairy will share her views on China’s dairy industry, while Mr Jim Mulhern of the U.S. National Milk Producers’ Federation will outline his country’s agricultural trade policies.
The segment on Market Opportunities in the Emerging Region will featuare three regional perspectives covering Asia, Africa and South America. Mr Nirajan Karade  of the National Dairy Development Board of India; Mr Ariel Londinsky of FEPALE, Uruguay; and Mr Peter Ngaruiya of ESADA, Kenya, will outline prospects in the dairy sector in their countries and régions.
IDF Director General Caroline Emond, who will chair an IDF Forum on Global Dairy Expertise examining current issues and achievements, said the Summit offers an excellent networking platform.
“The world’s leading experts in dairy will converge in South Korea to share useful knowledge and perspectives about the dairy value chain,” said Ms Emond. “Being a part of this network will benefit all involved in this dynamic sector.”

Dairy marketing; production innovation; food safety and regulation; using ICT for smart farming; as well as nutrition and health, will also be topics on the agenda of the five-day Summit, which includes a technical tour of dairy processing facilities.
